ISIS fighters in Iraq are shaming themselves, not women

Angelina Jolie just came back from a visit to Iraq and wrote a moving op-ed about her visit, urging for more action and resources to help the Iraqi and Syrian refugees who are stuck in dire conditions.

The stories that Jolie shares about her meetings with refugees have two common themes. Many refugees have had family members killed, and many have had female family members - even young girls - stolen by the militants to be used as sex slaves. Some of the women and girls in the refugee camp have themselves been raped by the militants. In Jolie's words:
What do you say to a mother with tears streaming down her face who says her daughter is in the hands of the Islamic State, or ISIS, and that she wishes she were there, too? Even if she had to be raped and tortured, she says, it would be better than not being with her daughter.

What do you say to the 13-year-old girl who describes the warehouses where she and the others lived and would be pulled out, three at a time, to be raped by the men? When her brother found out, he killed himself.
The religious hypocrisy of the ISIS militants is disgusting. Consider that these men are claiming to fight in the name of God, and to be as devout as it gets. They keep their women covered up in black from head to toe, lest another man so much as look at them. Men and women are kept separated in regular society. The standard that is expected of women is extremely high: they are kept perfectly pure and hidden away for one man alone; their husband - their owner.

The men, on the other hand, have cleverly devised a host of unlikely religious excuses for living out the most sickly wanton lifestyles. They want to be seen as heroes even as they terrorize, torture and serially rape women, young girls and even young boys without a qualm. Why wait until you are martyred to enjoy those heavenly virgins, right?

How ironic that these militants make even Hugh Hefner look like a greenhorn.  Oh yes, right in the heart of Iraqi warzones, you will find a giant guerrila-style Playboy mansion stocked with hundreds of imprisoned girls and women, all kept for for the enjoyment of these hard-working religious fighters. These ultra-puritanical men only eat halal, but they very willingly rape anyone.

What's more, ISIS fighters are also participating in the international sex trade. They sell captured women and girls to "men in Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia and other places."

Some ISIS fighters may think they are being true to their religion, but they are doing a huge disservice to Muslims everywhere. They are making Islam look like a faith forged by men who are looking for ways to subjugate women and indulge their most base instincts even as they claim to be honourable.

Jolie is right, more needs to be done. Which country will fill the void left by Obama's America, no longer a beacon of hope for those oppressed by the bullies of the world?
